Matt Hopkins, dedicated educator and Head of Port’s Middle School has been honoured with the NEiTA Foundation 2023 Excellence in Teaching Award.

This prestigious recognition is a testament to his unwavering commitment to transforming the lives of at-risk and disengaged students who have faced educational, social, emotional, and behavioural challenges.

The awards which received over 2500 nominations awarded Matt with the prestigious NEiTA Apple Award.

With a background as a primary school teacher, Matt joined Port School in 2015, and has made significant impact in the School’s ability to reengage students who were struggling to thrive within the traditional educational system. In 2016, with the support of Principal Barry Finch, Matt helped initiate a ground-breaking program specifically designed for at-risk and disengaged boys. These students, referred by various stakeholders, had struggled in previous school settings and desperately needed a fresh approach.

What set this program apart was its innovative use of a converted bus as a classroom. The program focused on building trust and providing education tailored to the individual needs of each student. Through this unique approach, Matt along with the dedicated team successfully rekindled these students’ passion for learning and personal growth.

In 2019, Matt, again with Principal Barry’s support, introduced another innovative program for at-risk year 8 and 9 students. This “Middle School” initiative sought to restore these students’ educational journey by reintroducing them to a primary school model of education. Thanks to Matt’s dedication and expertise, the program has thrived and has expanded to three classrooms for 2024, making a significant impact on the lives of an increasing number of students.

Matt’s passion lies in helping students who have faced adversity and challenges that have disrupted their educational progress. He believes that every student, regardless of their background, deserves the opportunity to succeed academically. Matt’s approach revolves around establishing meaningful relationships, creating structured routines, and fostering a growth mindset.

One of the pivotal elements of Matt’s teaching philosophy is his commitment to instilling the belief in students that they can learn and improve. By helping students understand the concept of a growth mindset, he empowers them to embrace their full potential and achieve academic success.

The Excellence in Teaching Award 2023 is a well-deserved recognition of Matt Hopkins’ exceptional contributions to education and his tireless efforts to help students who have fallen through the cracks of the traditional educational system. Matt’s dedication has not only transformed the lives of his students but have also inspired educators everywhere to make a difference. Congratulations Matt!

“Lest We Forget.”

Port School’s Hospitality students recently spent time exploring Fremantle Market, investigating the wide variety of international foods outlets and ingredients that were on offer.

They chose fabulous red dragon fruit to bring back to school, which we used in a tasty fruit salad at recess.

Our students were as usual excellent ambassadors for Port School!

The 2023 Port Art Show is an annual fundraising exhibition that not only displays the incredible talent of our Port students and donating local artists, but it raises much needed funds for the students at Klang Special School in Malaysia. This year, 9 Port students and 2 staff are embarking on the Malaysia excursion again after COVID halted it for 3 years. The art exhibition is a major fundraiser, helping us to sponsor a number of Klang students for a year of their education. This year’s exhibition was a hugely successful night that raised an amazing total of $10,000. The ‘Frock the System’ Fashion parade video was a fabulous addition to the format of the night, wowing the audience with the student’s creativity and confidence on the catwalk. We would like to thank the Port community for supporting us again this year, we couldn’t do it without you!

As our Hospitality students embark on their latest unit ‘Prepare and Present Non-Alcoholic Beverages’ be prepared to enjoy a variety of delicious drinks at recess. Students are learning about different types of drink preparation and presentation, starting off last week with delicious healthy milkshakes using fresh ingredients and this week they made a fabulous strawberry mocktail. Stay tuned for more tantalising drinks.

Dear Friends of Port,

Port School’s annual fundraising Art Exhibition is just weeks away, with the opening night taking place on Thursday 31st of August from 5-8pm.

This vibrant community event displays the work of our talented students and local artists and is a fantastic opportunity for you to purchase some original artworks, and in doing so, support a most worthy cause. Funds raised on the evening will provide much-needed educational and therapeutic support for orphaned students at Klang Special School in Malaysia.

This year we will be showcasing some of our students ‘Wearable Art’ creations alongside paintings, prints, ceramics and sculptural works. Our amazing Hospitality Team will again delight you with their friendly service and finger food creations during the evening.

We once again we look forward to your support in celebrating the creativity and generosity of our Port School Community and kindly request that you RSVP by 23rd August. Please feel free to share this invitation with your friends and family.

We hope to see you there!

Port School once again celebrated NAIDOC Day on Friday 30 June.

This year’s theme was “For our Elders”.  Across every generation our Elders have played, and continue to play, an important role and hold a prominent place in our communities and families.

Welcome to Country was a powerful speech delivered by Aunty Charne Hayden. Following on was the Mungart Yongah Dance Group who braved the cold weather with their didgeridoo and clapping sticks telling stories through their songs and use dance as a way of bringing people together.

Students and their families, staff, friends and supporters of Port then enjoyed a variety of art, cultural and fun events along with traditional food (the roo tail was to die for) cooked up by Margaret Farmer’s Catering.

Another great day full of celebration For our Elders.

An increasing number of students are travelling to and from school on eRideables, both eScooters and eSkateboards.

In order to ensure the safety of all students, staff, volunteers, contractors and visitors on campus, the following safety rules apply.

  • A helmet must always be worn when riding an eRideable.
  • Only one person is to be on an eRideable at any time. It is illegal for the rider to carry a passenger.
  • Under no circumstance should an eRideable be ridden on school grounds, riders must disembark before entering the school campus.
  • During school hours, all eRideables are to be securely parked/kept at the bike rack next to the Middle School.
  • Students are not permitted to access or ride their eRideable during recess or lunch break.
  • eRideables are not to be stored in classrooms, the staff room, the bus shed or any other school building.
  • The School does not accept responsibility for the loss, theft or damage to any eRideable. Students bring these to school at their own risk.
  • Students not following these rules will have their eRideable confiscated. This may result in the parent/carer having to collect the item from the school.

When riding eRideables outside of school grounds, riders are reminded that they must comply with the WA Road Safety Commission Rules, which can be found in the link below.
